Contactless international card
Look for gates showing the relevant contactless payment marks. Tap the physical card or device at entry, then use the exact same credential at exit.
If a card fails, do not keep tapping several cards while blocking the gate. Move to the side and ask the service center. A bank security setting, unsupported card, device-versus-card mismatch or temporary acceptance issue can all create the same red light.
Keep a second route. A payment method that works in a shop is not automatically guaranteed to work at every transport gate.
QR code through an app
Official Shanghai guidance lists options including Metro Daduhui, SH MaaS, Alipay and WeChat. Availability, registration and international-card support can differ by app and account.
Use QR transport if it is already working before the first important trip. Do not hold up the gate trying to complete identity verification for the first time.

Single-journey ticket
Ticket machines and station service centers provide a useful backup. Shanghai's official visitor guidance says station service centers can sell metro tickets using international bank cards.
Choose the destination station, pay, enter and keep the ticket until the journey is finished. If the machine interface or station name is confusing, show staff the destination in Chinese.
Tourist passes and Shanghai Pass
Passes can be convenient, but they are not automatically cheaper. Compare the current pass terms with the number of journeys you will actually make.
For a three-day visit concentrated in central Shanghai, pay-as-you-go can be easier than optimizing around a pass. A pass becomes more attractive when convenience matters more than calculating each ride or when its current non-metro benefits fit your plan.

Shanghai's official 2026 transport guide lists the standard metro fare as:
- RMB 3 for journeys up to 6 kilometers
- RMB 1 more for each additional 10 kilometers
The Airport Link Line is a separate suburban railway with its own fare system. Official guidance lists fares from RMB 4 to RMB 26 depending on the journey.
You do not need to calculate the exact metro fare before every ride. The gate system charges or validates the journey when you exit. The more useful planning questions are whether the line is operating, how many transfers you need and how far the correct station exit is from the real entrance.

Do not memorize the whole network. Save the Chinese destination, find the correct line direction and note the exit number.
How to Ride: The Five-Step Version
- Search the destination in AMap or another locally useful map.
- Confirm the station, line color, direction and any transfer.
- Pass the station security check and use your chosen ticket or credential at the entry gate.
- Follow the line number and terminal-station direction, not only the next stop.
- Use the same ticket or credential at exit, then follow the saved exit number.
The final exit matters. Large stations can place you on the wrong side of a major road, mall or riverfront block. A route is not finished when the train arrives; it is finished when you reach the correct street entrance.
Airport Routes
Pudong Airport (PVG)
Metro Line 2 is the low-cost route toward central Shanghai. It works best in operating hours when you have manageable luggage and a hotel close to a useful station.
The Maglev reaches Longyang Road, not the main hotel districts. The Airport Link Line connects Pudong and Hongqiao more quickly than crossing the city on the metro, but it is a separate railway and may still require another transfer.

Hongqiao Airport (SHA)

Do not treat an airport change like an ordinary central metro trip. Confirm whether the Airport Link, metro or direct road transfer fits the exact terminals and flight buffer. Metro, Taxi or DiDi?
Choose the metro when:
- the route is direct or has one simple transfer
- it is within operating hours
- luggage is manageable
- the destination is near the station

Choose a taxi or ride-hailing when:
- it is late or the last-train margin is narrow
- you have heavy luggage, children or limited mobility
- rain or heat makes station walking costly
- the route has awkward transfers
- the real entrance is far from the station

Common Mistakes
Using a different credential at exit
A phone wallet and its physical card may be treated as different payment credentials. Use exactly what you used to enter.
Searching only the English place name

Ignoring the direction terminal
Platforms are signed by the line's destination direction. Check the terminal station shown for the train you need.
Assuming the last train is the same everywhere
Last-train times vary by station, direction and date. Check the actual journey shortly before leaving, especially after an evening show or skyline visit.
Underestimating rush hour
Weekday commuter periods can make large interchange stations and central lines crowded. If you have luggage or flexible timing, travel outside the peak or use a direct ride.
Treating airport time as train time
Walking, security checks, baggage and terminal changes sit outside the published railway journey time.
A Simple Three-Day Metro Strategy
For the first-time three-day itinerary, choose a central base with a short walk to one useful station rather than trying to stay beside every line.
- Day 1: use Lines 10, 14 or 2 for Yu Garden, the Bund area and Pudong.
- Day 2: use Lines 1, 10 or nearby connections for central Puxi walking and a museum.
- Day 3: choose the line based on the one major focus, such as Line 11 for Disneyland.
The hotel-to-station walk and number of transfers matter more than the number of colored lines visible near the district. Use the hotel area selector before booking.
