How to Order Food in Shanghai Without Speaking Chinese

Order food in Shanghai without Chinese using QR menus, translation, picture menus and a few useful phrases, with payment, allergy and delivery backups.

Quick Take

You do not need fluent Chinese to eat well in Shanghai. You need one simple sequence:

  1. Choose a restaurant where the menu or food is visible.
  2. Scan the table QR code with Alipay or WeChat when there is one.
  3. Look for an English or translation option.
  4. Screenshot Chinese-only screens and translate the screenshot.
  5. Confirm quantity, spice level and total price before paying.
  6. Keep a paper-menu, pointing and staff-help backup.

For the first meal after landing, choose an easy environment: a mall restaurant, hotel area, busy chain, food hall or place with clear dish photos. Save the tiny neighborhood restaurant for when your data and payment are working.

Shanghai's official Easy Go service inside Alipay includes multilingual translation, dining recommendations and food-delivery access for international visitors. It is useful, but it does not make every restaurant mini-program English.

The Four Restaurant Flows

What you see What to do
Paper or tablet menu with photos Point, confirm quantity and pay by the method shown
QR code on the table Scan, select the table/order, translate screenshots, then pay
Counter with food or dish photos Point, order and pay before sitting down
No usable menu Show a dish photo, ask staff for help or choose another restaurant

There is no prize for winning a twenty-minute argument with a broken mini-program. A restaurant with a human ordering route is often the better meal.

Before Your First Meal

Prepare these before departure:

  • Alipay with an eligible card
  • WeChat Pay as a second route
  • working mobile data
  • a translation app with Chinese downloaded for offline use
  • the Easy Go entry inside Alipay
  • screenshots for allergies or dietary restrictions

Test payment at a low-pressure shop before depending on a QR restaurant order.

How to Use a QR Menu

1. Scan with the app the restaurant expects

The QR code may open an Alipay page, WeChat mini-program or ordinary web menu. If one scanner produces an error, ask staff which app to use rather than scanning repeatedly.

2. Confirm the table number

Many codes belong to a specific table. Check that the table number on screen matches where you are sitting.

3. Look for a language or guest option

Useful labels include:

  • English
  • 语言 — language
  • 游客 — visitor
  • 跳过 — skip
  • 暂不登录 — continue without logging in

Do not enter a stranger's phone number or invent identity details to bypass registration. Show the screen to staff when a local number is mandatory.

4. Translate screenshots

When the mini-program is Chinese-only:

  1. screenshot one category at a time
  2. open the screenshot in your translation app
  3. compare the translated name with the dish photo
  4. return to the menu and select the item

Machine translation can turn traditional dish names into nonsense. Use it to understand ingredients and cooking style, not to demand a perfect English title.

5. Check modifiers

Look carefully at:

  • quantity
  • portion size
  • spice level
  • optional toppings
  • set-meal choices
  • service, packing or delivery charges
  • whether a seafood price is per item or by weight

6. Confirm payment and order status

After payment, look for a confirmation such as 支付成功 (payment successful) or an order number. Keep the screen open until the restaurant confirms the kitchen received it.

If payment fails, use the Alipay troubleshooting guide instead of rebuilding the entire order several times.

The Point-and-Show Method

This works when technology does not.

Show staff:

  • a dish photo from the restaurant's current listing
  • a photo on the physical menu
  • the dish at a nearby table, without photographing the diners
  • a Chinese dish name saved on your phone

Say:

我要这个。

Wǒ yào zhège.

“I would like this one.”

Use your fingers to confirm quantity. Do not assume a nod means one portion.

Useful Restaurant Phrases

English Chinese
Do you have an English menu? 有英文菜单吗?
Do you have a paper menu? 有纸质菜单吗?
I would like this one 我要这个
One portion 一份
Not spicy 不要辣
A little spicy 微辣
Please help me order 请帮我点餐
Can I pay another way? 我可以用别的方式付款吗?
The QR code is not working 二维码打不开
The bill, please 买单

Save the Chinese text as a screenshot. Showing it is easier than hoping pronunciation works in a noisy restaurant.

Allergies and Dietary Restrictions

Do not rely only on a translated menu when a reaction could be serious.

Before travel, prepare a Chinese allergy card that states:

  • the exact allergen
  • that cross-contact matters, if it does
  • that sauces, stock and cooking oil also matter
  • what emergency action you may need

Have the wording checked by someone who understands both Chinese and the medical importance. Show it before ordering and choose a restaurant able to answer clearly. When staff seem uncertain, leave calmly and choose a more controlled option.

Vegetarian does not automatically mean no meat stock, lard, oyster sauce or small seafood. State the actual restriction rather than relying on one label.

Where People Get Stuck

The menu asks for a mainland phone number

Look for guest checkout. If there is none, ask staff to place the order or provide a paper menu.

The translation makes no sense

Use dish photos, ingredient characters and staff recommendations. Traditional names often do not translate literally.

The QR page loads but payment fails

Try the other wallet or ask to pay at the counter. A failed mini-program payment does not mean every merchant payment is broken.

The order never reaches the kitchen

Show the confirmation and order number to staff. Do not pay a second time until they check the first transaction.

The restaurant is too difficult

Leave. Shanghai has thousands of alternatives, and the better travel decision is sometimes the restaurant next door.

Food Delivery to a Hotel

Delivery adds address, phone and rider-call problems to the menu problem.

For the easiest version:

  • use Easy Go or another service that supports your account
  • copy the hotel's exact Chinese address
  • set the map pin at the correct entrance
  • use the hotel phone number only with permission
  • write 请送到酒店前台 — please deliver to the hotel front desk
  • tell reception that an order is arriving

For the first night, asking the hotel to help is often faster than learning a delivery app while hungry.

A Low-Stress First Meal Plan

  1. Check into the hotel.
  2. Ask reception for one nearby restaurant that accepts walk-ins.
  3. Choose a place with photos or human ordering.
  4. Order two or three dishes, not a banquet.
  5. Pay with the tested wallet and keep cash as backup.
  6. Save the restaurant if the workflow was easy.

The three-day Shanghai itinerary leaves enough flexibility for meals instead of forcing you into a reservation across the city.

FAQ

Do Shanghai restaurants have English menus?

Some do, especially hotels, malls, international restaurants and visitor-heavy areas. Local restaurants may use Chinese-only paper or QR menus, so keep translation and pointing backups.

Can I order food in Shanghai without WeChat?

Often yes. Some restaurants accept Alipay scanning, counter orders or staff-assisted ordering. A few mini-program flows are WeChat-specific, so having both wallets reduces friction.

How do I translate a Chinese QR menu?

Take screenshots of the menu and translate the saved images in a separate app. This is usually easier than trying to translate a scrolling mini-program live.

What if the QR menu requires a Chinese number?

Look for guest checkout, then ask staff for a manual or paper-menu route. Do not use made-up identity information.

Can I pay cash in a Shanghai restaurant?

RMB cash is a valid backup, although QR payment is common. Ask before ordering if the phone setup is not working.

What is the easiest Chinese phrase for ordering?

Point and say 我要这个 — “I would like this one.” Confirm the quantity with your fingers.

Is food delivery easy for foreigners?

It can work, but address pins, local phone fields and rider calls add difficulty. Hotel-front-desk delivery with staff awareness is the lowest-stress version.
