Step 1: Identify Your Entry Route

Ordinary visa-free entry

China currently offers unilateral or mutual visa-free entry to a changing list of nationalities. The allowed purpose and stay length are not identical for every policy.

Check all four points:

your exact passport nationality is currently covered
your purpose is allowed under that policy
your intended stay fits the permitted period
your passport is valid for the intended stay

If ordinary visa-free entry and visa-free transit do not apply, arrange the appropriate visa before departure. A tourist visa is not interchangeable with a business, study or work permission.

Step 2: Prepare the Travel Documents

Keep these easy to reach at airline check-in and border inspection:

your original passport
visa or proof of the visa-free route you are using
confirmed onward or return ticket
hotel reservation or complete local address
any visa or entry permission required for the next destination
a simple itinerary if your route or purpose is not obvious

Save offline copies as well as cloud copies. A phone battery, airport connection or login problem should not be the only thing between you and a document.

The airline checks whether it can carry you. Border inspection makes the final admission decision. A booking site's visa label is not a guarantee from either one.

Step 3: Complete the Official Arrival Card

China introduced an online arrival-card option in November 2025. It is free through official National Immigration Administration channels. Travelers who do not complete it in advance can still use the available facilities at the port of entry.

You should not need to pay a third-party website just to submit the arrival card. Be cautious when a search ad or unofficial page asks for a processing fee, passport upload or card payment.

Hotels normally handle temporary accommodation registration during check-in. Carry the passport used for the reservation.

If you stay in a private home or other non-hotel accommodation, official Shanghai guidance says overseas visitors should complete temporary accommodation registration within 24 hours. Step 5: Prepare the First-Day Operating Layer

These are not immigration documents. They are what let you leave the airport, reach the hotel and solve a problem without starting over.

Mobile data

Payment
