Jing'an Temple is the better balanced answer if you care about food, coffee, malls, and a calmer evening return. It is still central, still on Line 2, and easier to live in than the busiest parts of East Nanjing Road.
The Bund and Lujiazui are worth paying for when the hotel itself is part of the trip: a river view, a historic building, a high-rise stay, or a special night. They are not automatically the most convenient base for everyday sightseeing.
Changning, Putuo, and Yangpu are not "bad locations." They are value locations. They become smart when the hotel is close to the right metro line and the rate difference is large enough to matter.
Central Areas That Usually Work
People's Square and East Nanjing Road
This is the safest first base for a short trip. People's Square has Lines 1, 2, and 8. East Nanjing Road has Lines 2 and 10. Even if your map app, payment setup, or taxi pickup is not perfect yet, you can still walk to several headline places.

It is not the cheapest central area, but it is forgiving. That matters more than people admit on a first trip.
South Shaanxi Road, Huaihai Road, and Xintiandi
Do not search only for "French Concession." It is a historic area, not a clean booking zone, and the range is large. Search around South Shaanxi Road, Middle Huaihai Road, Xintiandi, Fuxing Park, or South Maoming Road.
This area is best if cafes, restaurants, street walks, and neighborhood texture are part of the trip. It is less ideal if your main plan is to move quickly between big sights every day.
The Bund and Lujiazui
Book the Bund or Lujiazui for the hotel experience, not because the map looks central. The Bund waterfront is not always the simplest metro location. Lujiazui has large blocks, elevated walkways, and road crossings that make a nearby tower feel farther away at street level.
If you book a Bund hotel, confirm the exact room category. "River view" may mean partial side view unless the listing clearly guarantees the view you want.

Smoke
A non-smoking label does not always mean the room has never had smoke. Sort reviews by newest and search for "smell" or "smoke."
Noise
Check for construction, road noise, corridor noise, and thin walls separately. Overall scores can hide the thing that ruins sleep.
Guest count
Enter every guest correctly. Two adults plus a 17-year-old usually means three adults, and a basic twin room may not allow that occupancy.
Foreign passports
