What to see

Ancient Chinese Bronzes

The museum's signature collection. Look beyond individual masterpieces and notice how vessel forms, animal decoration, inscriptions, ritual use and casting technology change over time.

Ancient Chinese Ceramics

About 558 objects or groups trace the development of Chinese ceramics. Nearly half were newly presented when the East building display opened. The final section has included a protected touch sample; availability is subject to daily operation.

Ancient Chinese Sculpture

About 289 objects cover sculpture from the Shang and Zhou periods through the Ming and Qing. This is one of the most accessible galleries for visitors without prior knowledge of Chinese writing.

Jade, Currency and Seals

The jade gallery presents nearly 350 objects. The currency gallery contains more than 6,000 items and is the museum's densest permanent display. The seals gallery is more specialized and particularly rewarding for visitors interested in Chinese writing or institutional history.

Calligraphy and Painting

These galleries present historical surveys, but fragile works rotate for conservation. Never assume that a work mentioned in an old article will be on view on your date.

Suggested routes

Two hours: Bronzes → Sculpture → Ceramics.
Three to four hours: Add Jade and either Currency or a Shanghai-themed gallery.
Five hours: Add Calligraphy, Painting, Seals and one interactive space if booked.

Shanghai Museum East reservations in 2026

General permanent-gallery entry does not require a reservation. For Curio-City or the Digital Gallery:

  1. Follow the Shanghai Museum WeChat account.
  2. Open GO上博参观预约.
  3. Select Shanghai Museum East.
  4. Choose 专项预约 for a separately bookable space.

The museum does not currently publish one permanent release time for every interactive space. Check the live mini program rather than relying on the former whole-museum 12:00 release rule.

If you are comparing free reservations, paid tickets and passport rules across attractions, use the Shanghai attraction booking guide before building a tight day around a museum slot.
