Museum admission in Shanghai is not governed by one citywide system. A museum may offer free walk-in admission while requiring a second reservation for an interactive gallery. Another may sell admission, special-exhibition and cinema tickets separately.
This guide compares nine major museums from the point of view of an international visitor: what each museum is best for, whether you need to book, which ID to bring, where to buy, and how far the museum is from central Shanghai.

The four ticket types visitors often confuse
- General admission: entry to the museum building and permanent galleries.
- Special-exhibition ticket: a separate paid exhibition, sometimes replacing normal admission.
- Timed experience: an interactive gallery, VR experience or small theater with limited capacity.
- Film or education ticket: a planetarium film, 4D cinema or workshop booked separately from admission.
Always identify which of these you are booking before paying.
