World Expo Museum is the only official museum and documentation center of the Bureau International des Expositions. It covers much more than Expo 2010, tracing world's fairs from 1851 through their influence on technology, design, architecture and cities.

Address: 818 Mengzi Road, near East Longhua Road. Take Line 13 to World Expo Museum, Exit 2.
Approximate straight-line distance: 4.1 km from the Bund, 3.8 km from Jing'an Temple, 32.1 km from Pudong Airport and 13.5 km from Hongqiao Airport.
What to see
Eight permanent galleries across five floors cover early industrial exhibitions, national pavilions, technological showcases, Expo architecture and the legacy of Expo 2010. The museum is strongest for visitors interested in design and urban history rather than a traditional collection of fine art.
Temporary exhibitions are separate. As of July 2026, the museum is hosting a paid exhibition of Qing imperial clothing from the Palace Museum; do not assume it is included in free permanent-gallery admission.
Admission
Individual visitors currently walk in without a reservation. Groups of more than 100 should contact the museum. Bring a passport even though routine individual admission is simple.
The website currently lists extended Saturday hours until 20:00 from July 11 to August 29, 2026, with last entry at 19:15. This is temporary and must be removed after the period ends.
Suggested visit
90 minutes: early Expo history through Expo 2010 highlights.
Three hours: all permanent galleries plus one temporary or effects-theater program.
Combine it with Power Station of Art or a Huangpu riverside walk.
Who should go
World Expo Museum is a good fit for visitors who like design history, urban planning, architecture, or the story of how world's fairs shaped modern cities. It is also one of the easier museum choices when you want a free, structured indoor stop that is less stressful than high-demand ticketed attractions.
It is less compelling if you want famous individual artworks or a classic Shanghai history museum. The collection is thematic rather than object-famous. Children who enjoy models, screens and big exhibition spaces may do well here; visitors who dislike museum text may prefer China Art Museum or a shorter stop around the Expo riverfront.
What can disappoint visitors
The permanent galleries are free, but temporary exhibitions and effects-theater programs can follow separate rules. Do not assume everything in the building is included just because the museum itself has free admission. Holiday hours and evening openings also change by notice, so the time on an old blog post may be wrong.
The museum is easy by metro, but it is not in the same visitor cluster as People's Square or the Bund. If you only have one full day in Shanghai, come here because the Expo theme interests you, not because it appears on a generic museum list.
How to combine it
The easiest pairing is Power Station of Art, especially when PSA has a strong current exhibition. For a slower afternoon, add a Huangpu riverside walk or Expo Culture Park. If you are staying near Jing'an or People's Square, check the return route before dinner so the museum does not quietly push your evening too late.
Facilities
The museum lists free large-luggage storage, wheelchairs and strollers with ID, information services and paid guide devices. Effects-theater programs may use separate sessions.
