Shanghai Museum's People's Square building is currently dedicated to The Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas. From July 9, 2026 through November 14, 2027, the exhibition occupies Floors 1–3 and all visitors need a ticket. The building is not currently the place to see the museum's standard Chinese bronze, ceramic and jade surveys; those are at Shanghai Museum East.

Location
The museum is at 201 People's Avenue, entered through the South Gate on Wusheng Road. Use People's Square Station, Lines 1/2/8, Exit 1, or Dashijie Station, Line 14, Exit 4.
It is approximately 2.2 km from the Bund, 2.5 km from Jing'an Temple, 33.5 km from Pudong Airport and 13.2 km from Hongqiao Airport in a straight line.
Ticket release
Standard tickets are sold through the official Shanghai Museum WeChat mini program, Ctrip and Trip.com, with a ticket desk at the museum subject to availability.
Tickets for the following calendar month open at 12:00 on the first day of each month. Select the date, session and named visitor at purchase. Each valid ID can book once per day.
Early-bird rights used a buy-first, redeem-later process. That sales period has ended; it only matters to a visitor who already holds an early-bird redemption code.
Ticket categories include full-price, designated-date, concession and parent-child products. Confirm the live price in Trip.com because the museum's official price table is published as an image.
Foreign-passport steps
- Open Trip.com and find the current exhibition at Shanghai Museum, People's Square.
- Confirm it is not Shanghai Museum East.
- Select a date and session.
- Enter the passport name and number exactly.
- Bring the original passport and electronic order to the South Gate.
The museum also advertises separate VR experiences. Check whether a product is exhibition-only, VR-only or a combined ticket.
Suggested visit
Allow around 2.5 hours for the object exhibition, or 3.5 hours with a VR experience and break. Combine it with Nanjing Road, the Bund or Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center rather than attempting a full visit to Shanghai Museum East on the same day.
Who should go
This branch makes sense when the current special exhibition is the reason for your visit, or when you are already staying around People's Square and want a central indoor stop. Its location is excellent for a short cultural break between the park, Nanjing Road, and the metro.
It is not the right choice if you expect the full Shanghai Museum collection. Most visitors looking for bronzes, ceramics, jade and a broader museum day should start with Shanghai Museum East instead. Think of People's Square as the current-exhibition site and Shanghai Museum East as the main collection site.
What to check first
Before you go, check the current exhibition title, date range, ticketing rule and passport requirement. Some exhibitions may sell out, use timed entry, or have different concession rules. If the current exhibition does not interest you, do not visit just because the location is famous.
How to combine it
The easiest route is People's Park, the museum exhibition, then East Nanjing Road or the Bund. If the weather is poor, use nearby malls and metro connections as backup. For a heavier museum day, pair it with Shanghai Museum East only if you are comfortable crossing the river and still have enough time for both sites.
