Explore this stopChoose an illustrated place to explore the neighborhood.
Illustrated places, not a navigation map. Numbers identify the artwork; use the walking order below and separate map pins. The drawing compresses distances and interprets architecture. Place 2 recalls a closed bookshop, on an optional extension.
Choose your afternoon
Choose this walk if you enjoy older houses, leafy pavements and the life around a music school. Hengshan Road opens the scene; Dongping Road slows it down; Fenyang Road brings the musical institutions into view. You can enjoy the outing even when every interior is closed.
Hengshan Road
国际礼拜堂

Why stop: A red-brick church behind the trees gives the walk a gentle architectural opening.
The story: Completed in 1925, the church is also known as the International Chapel. Its Gothic Revival brickwork belongs to the neighborhood's early international community.
What to do: Look at the building from the public pavement, then continue toward Dongping Road. Keep the entrance clear and give worshippers space.
Allow: 10–15 min outside. This is an editorial allowance.
Exterior stop: The tourism listing says the building is not open for general sightseeing. Worship arrangements are separate; this walk does not depend on entering.
Optional Xujiahui extension
衡山·和集旧址 / 衡山坊

Why stop: The supplied illustration remembers a bookshop in Hengshan Fang. Use it as a clue to the area's reuse of older houses.
The story: The Mix Place combined books, magazines and cultural events at the Xujiahui end of Hengshan Road. In August 2023, staff confirmed to reporters that it would close on August 31.
What to do: Include the Hengshan Fang block only if you are starting in Xujiahui. Browse whatever businesses are actually open, then continue along Hengshan Road toward the church.
Allow: 15–30 min for the surrounding block. This is an editorial allowance.
Historical reference: Do not travel here expecting the original bookshop or its cafe. We found closure reporting and no verified reopening notice. This is not a rest stop on the compact walk.
Dongping Road
爱庐 / 东平路9号住宅

Why stop: A garden-house address makes Dongping Road's residential history tangible, even when the building is partly hidden.
The story: Ai Lu is associated with Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling. The conservatory's own account identifies it as a protected building within its affiliated music school's Dongping Road site.
What to do: Save the exact address, pause only where the public pavement permits and read the street as a lived-in neighborhood. Continue east toward Yueyang Road.
Allow: 5–10 min by the street. This is an editorial allowance.
School boundary: This guide has not confirmed routine interior access. Treat it as a school-boundary stop; an open gate or a historical visitor event is not permission to enter. A clear facade view is not guaranteed.
Fenyang Road
上海音乐学院(汾阳路校区)

Why stop: The music quarter makes sense here: teaching, performance and older architecture share the same streets.
The story: The conservatory traces its beginnings to the National Conservatory founded in 1927. Its Fenyang Road campus is the musical anchor of this neighborhood.
What to do: Finish the compact walk around the campus's street-facing public spaces. If you want an interior visit, check the institution's current campus-opening information before making it part of the day.
Allow: 20–30 min around the public edge. This is an editorial allowance.
Public-space rules apply: The conservatory publishes public-opening and space-reservation information. Access to a public area does not include teaching rooms or every building. We have not tested foreign-passport booking; practice music is not a scheduled outdoor performance.
Fenyang Road
白公馆 / 上海沪剧院

Why stop: A historic garden house now carries a living Shanghai opera tradition, rather than serving only as an old-house photo stop.
The story: The city's 2026 cultural guide identifies this 1919 house as an early work by architect Laszlo Hudec. Its Bai Mansion nickname recalls Bai Chongxi and Bai Xianyong; the site is now the Shanghai Huju Opera Theatre.
What to do: View what is visible from the public pavement. For an actual performance or announced heritage visit, check the theatre's current event and admission arrangements separately.
Allow: 10–15 min outside. This is an editorial allowance.
Check event access: The April 2026 official guide says there is no general entry outside performances. Special openings may use reservations. A cafe purchase does not grant access; this is not listed here as a restaurant.
The small street junction
普希金像 / 普希金纪念碑

Why stop: A small memorial at a three-road junction adds a literary pause between Dongping Road and the walk up Fenyang Road.
The story: The monument commemorates the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Shanghai's historical record notes its first erection in 1937 and later reconstruction.
What to do: Find the monument by its Chinese name, reach it using the available pedestrian crossings, then continue up Fenyang Road toward No. 150 and the conservatory.
Allow: 5–10 min. This is an editorial allowance.
Public street landmark: The illustration is an artistic interpretation of the memorial, not an exact sculptural reference. Stay clear of traffic and leave room for other people at the junction.
Good to know
This walk is in Xuhui, around Hengshan Road, Dongping Road and Fenyang Road. The Shanghai Conservatory of Music is at 20 Fenyang Road. It is a separate neighborhood outing from Wukang Road and the Suzhou River.
Allow about 2–3 hours for the compact street walk, including a seated break. Starting at Xujiahui and adding Hengshan Fang makes a longer 3–4 hour outing. These are planning allowances, not measured walking times, and exclude your hotel transfers.
Do not plan around the original bookshop. Staff confirmed an August 31, 2023 closure to reporters, and we have not verified a reopening. The illustration preserves it as a historical reference. Hengshan Fang is an optional Xujiahui-side extension.
Interior access varies. Ai Lu belongs to a school site; the church is not listed for general sightseeing; the Huju Opera Theatre requires current event or opening arrangements. The conservatory publishes public-opening information, but this does not open every teaching room or building. The compact walk works from public streets.
You may hear practice in the neighborhood, but there is no guaranteed street concert or evening soundtrack. Choose late afternoon for the walking light and your schedule. If hearing a performance matters, book an actual event through the venue.
Use the numbers to identify the six places. The drawing compresses the area and preserves an older bookshop; it is not a street map. The compact walking order below is 1 → 3 → 6 → 5 → 4. The optional Xujiahui start adds place 2 before place 1. Save separate pins in a live map.
Sources & artwork
Online source check: October 9, 2026. The illustration and six individual artworks came from a supplied music-quarter route document. They are stylized interpretations, not photographs or surveyed building records. Original numbering is retained to identify the pictures; the practical route order is given separately.
Addresses, institutional use and the bookshop's closure were checked against the sources below. Earlier articles supply historical context; they do not establish today's admission, opening times or ticket inventory. This is an editorial walk, not a completed site visit, accessibility survey or test booking.
